Carers Break Grants are provided by the Adult & Communities Directorate at the City Council to assist relatives and friends who provide substantial and regular care to an adult (someone who is over 18 years), who needs support in their daily life due to a disability, long-term illness or mental health problem. The grant is worth £250 and only one grant will be paid in any two year period. The sole purpose of the grant is to help the carer take a break and to relieve the pressure of caring. It can be used towards the cost of a holiday(s), day trip(s) and activities (recreational or educational) for the carer or the person cared for, as well as equipment and services in the home. For more information please call 0121 675 8000. Carers face many difficulties in accessing the help and support that they need. Our team of Information Officers find that the most difficult problem they have to deal with is obtaining a social worker and are happy to contact Social Workers on behalf of carers and deal with any problems that arise. If you need legal advice then look no further, a Solicitor now visits Birmingham Carers Centre once a month and the first 30 minutes of your appointment will be FREE. For detailed information read leaflet HC11 – Help with Health Costs. You can get a copy at Job Centre Plus, NHS hospitals and your doctor, dentist or optician may have one too. Alternatively please visit: www.dh.gov.uk/helpwithhealthcosts to download your copy now. For a list of Residential Home Care Facilities please contact Lisa Hughes on 0121 675 8168.
